New Patio and Step Install Gives This Backyard a Real Purpose

Patio Installation in West MichiganThis backyard had a real access problem. The upper deck sat well above the lower level, and getting between the two meant navigating an awkward slope with no clean path. Not exactly the kind of outdoor space you want to spend time in. So we got to work on a solution that would make the whole area functional and worth using. We installed a large paver patio off the lower level sliding door - the kind of space that actually fits patio furniture and gives you room to breathe. The pavers are a charcoal blend with a textured, stone-like finish that holds up well and looks sharp without being fussy. The curved edge of the patio gives it a finished, intentional look rather than just a square slab dropped against the house. The bigger challenge was the grade change between the patio and the upper yard. We built a block retaining wall along the slope and ran a wide set of steps up through it, connecting the lower patio to the upper deck area above. Stepping stone accents were worked into the mulch bed alongside the wall to soften the transition and add some character. It all flows together in a way that makes the yard feel cohesive. That's what good hardscaping does. It solves real problems - drainage, access, wasted space - while making the property look like someone actually thought it through. A patio paired with a well-built retaining wall and steps isn't just a visual upgrade. It's a functional improvement you'll use every single day.

Paver Patio Build in Progress - Here's Where We're At

Patio Installation in West MichiganThis one is coming along nicely. We're mid-install on a paver patio for a two-story home with a walk-out lower level, and the bones of this project are looking really solid. The compacted gravel base is prepped and screeded - that's the critical stage most people never see but it's what determines how well a patio holds up for years down the road. A lot goes into getting the base right. We're talking proper excavation depth, compacted aggregate, and a screeded sand layer that keeps everything level and stable. Skip those steps and you end up with a patio that shifts, sinks, or cracks. We don't cut corners on the foundation - ever. The pavers are already laid across a good portion of the space, and you can see the charcoal blend we're working with. Dark, clean, and bold. It's going to pair really well with the white brick exterior and existing upper deck. The pattern and layout are intentional - this isn't just plopping pavers down and calling it a day. We've also got retaining wall work happening along the left side of the yard - stacked block steps and a tiered wall system to manage the grade change. That kind of detail makes the difference between a backyard that functions and one that just looks good in photos. We're excited to show the finished product. Patio installations like this one take time to do right, and we're not rushing it. Stay tuned.

One-Day Retaining Wall Build Using Unilock Pisa Smooth Block

Retaining Walls in West MichiganSteep, eroding slopes don't fix themselves. Left alone, they shift, slump, and cause bigger headaches down the road. That's exactly what we were dealing with here - a raw, unstable hillside sitting right up against an existing concrete structure that needed a clean, functional solution before things got worse. We laid out the wall line, got the excavation done, and went straight to work with Unilock Pisa Smooth block. It's a great product - clean face, solid construction, and it holds up. The dark charcoal color gives it a sharp look that plays well against natural surroundings. We also stepped the wall up the slope rather than running it flat, which is the right call on a grade like this. That stair-step approach follows the terrain naturally and keeps everything structurally sound. What we ended up with is a wall that does exactly what it's supposed to do. It holds the slope, transitions cleanly into the existing concrete work next to it, and looks good doing it. The curved base ties into the driveway edge in a way that feels intentional rather than slapped together. The whole thing came together in an afternoon. That's not luck - it's having the right crew, the right materials, and knowing what you're doing before you ever pick up a shovel. Retaining walls look simple from the outside, but the prep work underneath is what makes or breaks them long-term.

Stone Steps and Walkway Build - Day 1 Progress

Hardscaping in West MichiganHere's what day one of a step and walkway build looks like. The slope off the back of this home needed a real solution - not just something that looks decent, but something that functions well and holds up long-term. That's exactly the kind of work we dig into. The excavator was on-site moving material and shaping the grade so we could get the stone steps set correctly from the start. Getting the base right on a sloped installation like this is everything. If you rush that part, you're going to be resetting steps a few years down the road. We don't cut corners on the foundation work. You can already see the natural stone steps taking shape along the slope, with gravel base being worked in beneath each course. The material staged in the yard tells you there's still plenty of work ahead - and we're fired up to keep the momentum going. This is the kind of hardscaping work that completely changes how a backyard functions. A properly built stone step and walkway system ties an outdoor living space together and makes the whole yard more accessible and usable. When it's done right, it lasts for decades. We made solid progress on day one and we're looking forward to seeing this one come together. Stay tuned for more updates as this build moves forward.

Catch Basin Install Fixes Backyard Drainage Problem

Trenching in West MichiganEvery time it rained, this homeowner watched water pool up right at their back door. Not a little puddle - actual standing water that had nowhere to go. Regrading the area to push water away from the house wasn't a viable option given the layout of the property, so we went a different route. We installed a catch basin to collect the water at the source and redirect it away from the home through a solid pipe run. That meant trenching a clean line from the back of the house all the way out to a proper discharge point. It's a straightforward fix when done right, but it has to be sized and sloped correctly or you're just moving the problem somewhere else. The pipe run stretches a solid distance across the yard, and getting it seated at the right grade is what makes the whole system work. Too flat and water backs up. Too steep and you risk erosion at the outlet. We take that part seriously on every drainage job we do. We're heading back once the ground has had time to dry out to finish grading the disturbed areas. The goal is for the yard to look as clean as the drainage system functions when we're done - no rough edges left behind. Water pooling near a door or foundation isn't just an annoyance. Over time it works its way into crawl spaces, causes erosion, and creates bigger headaches. If you've got standing water that keeps coming back no matter what, a catch basin and proper trenching might be exactly what the property needs.

Retaining Walls Too Close to the House? Here's the Fix

Retaining Walls in West MichiganWhen rock walls are built too close to a home's foundation, water has nowhere to go - and it goes straight to the siding. That's exactly what was happening here. The original walls were sitting right up against the house, trapping moisture and creating a drainage problem that was only going to get worse over time. We pulled both walls back and rebuilt them from the ground up. Moving them out gave the home proper breathing room and allowed water to drain away from the foundation the way it should. It sounds straightforward, but the positioning of a retaining wall matters a lot more than most people realize. Too close, and you're funneling water toward your home every time it rains. While we were already on site, we also tore out an old failing mulch bed wall out front and replaced it with a fresh block wall. The front bed wall had clearly run its course - worn down, losing its shape, and not doing its job anymore. The new curved block wall wraps cleanly around the planting bed and sits at the right height to actually hold everything in place. Sometimes a repair just isn't the right call. When a wall is in the wrong spot or has deteriorated past the point of patching, rebuilding it correctly is the move that protects your home long-term. We see a lot of walls that were installed with good intentions but without the right drainage plan behind them - and this was a solid example of that. If your retaining wall is showing signs of failure - shifting, leaning, crumbling, or sitting too close to your home - it's worth getting eyes on it sooner rather than later. These problems don't fix themselves, and the longer water is working against your foundation, the bigger the repair becomes down the road.

Flagstone Walkway Install With a Buried Surprise Underneath

Hardscaping in West MichiganNot every job goes exactly as planned. This one had a curveball early on - a massive white pine stump buried right in the path of the walkway. Before a single stone could go down, that stump had to come out completely. No shortcuts, no working around it. Getting the base right is the whole ballgame with flagstone, and building over a rotting stump is a recipe for shifting, cracking, and callbacks down the road. Once the stump was cleared and the ground was properly excavated and compacted, we laid out the path using spray paint to mark the exact curve before anything was committed. That step matters more than most people realize. A flowing, natural curve like this one doesn't just happen - it gets planned out carefully so the finished walkway looks intentional, not accidental. One thing we're always deliberate about is protecting the customer's lawn during the job. Plywood sheets were run the full length of the access route so our equipment and material hauls didn't tear up the grass getting to the work area. When we wrapped up and pulled everything out, the lawn looked untouched. The only evidence we were there was the walkway itself. The finished product is a wide, gently curving flagstone walkway with natural boulder accent steps at the entry point. The irregular stone pieces are fitted tightly together with consistent joint spacing throughout - that's not something you eyeball, it takes time and patience to get right. This is the kind of hardscaping work that holds up for decades when it's done properly from the ground up. Clean job sites and solid craftsmanship aren't extras - they're the baseline for how we operate on every project. Whether it's a flagstone walkway, a patio installation, or something more complex, the process is always the same: do it right, leave it clean, build it to last.

24 Yards of Mulch and a Full Landscape Facelift

Mulch Installation in West MichiganSome yards just need a reset. Overgrown beds, no real definition, and bare spots that make the whole property look tired - that's exactly what we were working with here. The front beds had gotten away from the homeowner, the side of the house needed attention, and the backyard slope was a tangled mess that had taken over completely. We brought in Frontier to handle the land clearing side of things, and once that was done, we got to work. Over 24 yards of mulch went in across the front beds, around the trees, and through the backyard - covering a lot of ground and pulling the whole property together. Fresh mulch does more than just look good. It locks in moisture, keeps weeds down, and gives your beds a clean, finished appearance that lasts. The front of the house came together especially well. The natural river rock border along the beds gives everything a defined edge without feeling overdone. Combined with the fresh mulch, the beds look intentional now - not like an afterthought. The side of the house got a clean gravel bed along the foundation, bordered with pavers to keep it tidy and functional. Out back, the retaining wall along the slope was already in place, but you wouldn't have known it - the overgrowth had buried it. Once cleared, we mulched that entire raised area so it actually looks like part of the landscape again instead of a forgotten corner. That's the kind of detail that makes a difference when you're looking at the yard from the house. A lot of properties around here are one good cleanup and a few yards of mulch away from looking completely different. It doesn't have to be a massive project to make a real impact. Sometimes it just takes the right team and the right materials to get things back on track.

Tilling Job Knocked Out and Ready for New Plants

Mulch Installation in West MichiganSometimes a spot on your property just needs to be turned over and reset. Overgrown, weedy, full of roots and debris - it gets to a point where you can't plant anything useful without starting from scratch first. That's exactly what we knocked out here. A solid stretch of ground tilled clean and ready to go. The tractor did the heavy lifting, breaking up the soil and working through whatever was sitting on top. What you end up with is loose, workable ground that's actually ready to receive new plants. This kind of work doesn't have to be a big drawn-out ordeal. We got in, got it done, and left the customer with a clean slate. That's the goal every time. We handle all kinds of property work - from brush removal and hogging to tilling and ground prep like this. If you've got a spot that's been sitting there overgrown and unusable, we can get it sorted out a lot faster than you might think. Spring is a natural time to tackle this stuff, but honestly, if the ground needs turning, we can make it happen. Give Ace Hardscaping a call and let's talk about what your property needs.

Large-Format Stone Steps Built for Patio Access and Flow

Patio Installation in West MichiganWhen a yard has grade changes between the lawn and patio, getting from point A to point B becomes a real problem. Not just functionally - it looks unfinished too. That's exactly what we were working with here. The slope running alongside the house needed a proper connection point to the patio, and a flimsy fix wasn't going to cut it. We went with large-format stone steps to bridge that elevation change. These aren't light pieces - they take real equipment and careful placement to get right. You can see from the mid-install work that we excavated properly, laid a compacted gravel base, and used geotextile fabric before setting each stone. That prep work is what keeps steps like these from shifting or settling down the road. The finished steps sit cleanly against the existing boulder retaining wall, which ties the whole side yard together. The gray tones in the cut stone echo the rounded fieldstone on the home's foundation - that kind of visual continuity doesn't happen by accident. It takes some thought about how each element relates to what's already there. With mulch installation wrapping out the planting beds around the base of the porch, the space reads as one cohesive design rather than a collection of separate features. The steps do the functional work of connecting two levels, but they also anchor the whole side of the property. That's the difference between hardscaping that just solves a problem and hardscaping that actually improves the space.

Cleared and Leveled Cattle Landing Area from Scratch

Brush removal & land clearing in West MichiganA usable landing area for cattle doesn't just happen. Before any animals can move through a space safely and efficiently, the ground has to be right. Uneven terrain, roots, debris - all of it gets in the way. That's exactly what we were dealing with here. We brought in our Kubota mini excavator to do the heavy lifting. The goal was straightforward: clear the area, pull out what didn't belong, and grade it down to a clean, level surface that actually functions. The difference between a rough patch of ground and a workable livestock area comes down to prep work, and that's where we put in the time. This kind of site prep is more involved than people expect. You're not just pushing dirt around. You're reading the slope, managing where material goes, and making sure the finished grade is going to hold up under regular use. A cattle landing area takes a beating - hooves, equipment, weather. Get the groundwork wrong and you're dealing with ruts, drainage issues, and a muddy mess every time it rains. The cleared and leveled surface you see here gives this property a solid foundation to build from. Whether that means adding gravel, fencing, or just putting the space into regular use, the hard part is done. Clean ground, workable space, ready for whatever comes next. Good land clearing and grading work is the kind of thing that quietly makes everything else easier. It's not glamorous, but it's the step that determines whether a property actually works the way you need it to.

Fresh Block Retaining Wall Built to Hold the Hill

Retaining Walls in West MichiganSloped ground next to a house is one of those problems that looks minor until it isn't. Soil shifts, mulch washes out, and over time the grade starts working against you. That's exactly the kind of situation we were dealing with on this property in Lowell. We installed a new segmental block retaining wall to hold back the raised bed area along the side of the home. The wall curves around the bed in a clean arc - following the natural contour of the space instead of forcing a straight line where one doesn't fit. That curved layout isn't just for looks. It actually distributes the lateral soil pressure more evenly across the wall. The block itself has a textured, split-face finish that gives it some character without looking overdone. It ties into the existing concrete foundation wall while still standing on its own visually. Fresh mulch fills the bed behind it, ready for plantings once the season picks up. What we always try to get right on jobs like this is the base and backfill work - the stuff you can't see once it's done. A wall that looks great but settles or leans within a couple of years is a failure. We build these to stay put. Properties across the Lowell area deal with rolling terrain and drainage challenges, and a properly built retaining wall is one of the most practical long-term investments you can make in your yard.

Fresh Pea Stone Driveway and a Trailer Loaded for the Next One

Resurfacing Driveways in West MichiganPea stone is one of those materials that just looks sharp when it's laid right. Clean, uniform, and smooth from edge to edge - it gives a driveway or parking area a finished look that gravel alternatives rarely match. This one came out exactly how it should. What we love about pea stone is how well it works for larger, open areas like this. It drains well, it's low maintenance, and it holds up season after season without the cracking and heaving you get with poured surfaces. For a property with a barn setup and open land, it's honestly one of the best fits you can go with. We're already loaded up and ready for the next job too. The trailer is staged with materials and we're working around the weather the best we can - which is just part of the job this time of year. A little overcast skies won't slow us down. Spring schedules fill up faster than most people expect. Once the ground firms up and conditions cooperate, everyone wants work done at the same time. We're already booking out, so if you've been sitting on a driveway or hardscaping project, sooner is better than later.

New Patio Steps and Retaining Wall Give This Backyard a Sharp Finished Look

Lit patio steps & curved retaining wallA backyard with a great deck and hot tub deserves access that matches. That was the situation here - the homeowner had a solid outdoor setup but no clean, safe way to get down to the yard level. The grade change between the patio and the lawn needed to be addressed, and we wanted the solution to look intentional, not like an afterthought. We built out wide, multi-step hardscape stairs leading down from the raised patio, using block that ties into the retaining wall running along the side. The steps are broad and comfortable - the kind you can actually walk down with your hands full. No narrow, awkward entry. Just solid footing and a clean transition from the patio space to the yard below. The built-in step lighting is one of those details that makes a real difference. It's not just aesthetic - it means the space is safe and usable after dark. That matters when the hot tub is running and people are coming and going in the evening. The warm glow it throws across the steps also gives the whole backyard a polished look once the sun goes down. On the side of the patio, the curved retaining wall creates a raised planting bed that gives the space some structure and definition. It separates the patio area from the surrounding yard in a way that feels natural. Good hardscaping like this does double duty - it solves a functional problem and makes the whole space look more put-together at the same time.

Brand-New Gravel Driveway Installed in Lowell

New gravel driveway in Lowell, MIThis one started from nothing. No driveway at all - just grass and dirt where a solid surface needed to be. That's the kind of job we actually enjoy, because you get to see the full picture from start to finish. We came in, stripped out the existing ground, graded everything properly, and brought in the gravel to build it right from the base up. Skipping the grading step is how you end up with a driveway that washes out or develops soft spots after a few good rains. We don't skip it. The base has to be right before anything else happens. Once the gravel was down and spread, you've got a clean, firm surface that handles traffic, weather, and daily use without breaking down. It also cleaned up the whole look of the property - what was just a muddy, unmarked yard now has a defined driveway and a solid parking area right up to the garage. A gravel driveway done right isn't just convenient - it holds its shape, drains well, and doesn't need constant attention. And whether you need a brand-new driveway put in, an extension added, or an existing one regraded and resurfaced, we handle all of it. We serve Lowell and the surrounding areas, and jobs like this are exactly what we're built for. Every property is different. Some need a short run from the road to the garage. Others need a long lane like this one, plus a full turnaround area. Either way, the process is the same - we look at what you've got, plan it out, and build something that's going to last.

Concrete Block Retaining Wall Built to Hold and Impress

Retaining Walls in West MichiganWhen a property has grade changes or soil shifting along the foundation, you need something that's going to hold - not just look good for a season. That's exactly the kind of problem a well-built retaining wall solves. And that's what we set out to do here. The wall runs along the side of the home, separating the lower gravel drive area from the higher soil bed near the foundation. The concrete blocks are stacked clean and level from one end to the other, with a flat cap course that ties the whole thing together. It's the kind of detail that separates a wall that just functions from one that actually looks like it belongs there. One thing we focus on with retaining walls is getting the structure right before worrying about anything else. A wall that shifts, leans, or settles within a few years isn't doing its job. Using solid concrete block gives you the mass and durability to handle lateral soil pressure season after season - freeze, thaw, rain, whatever. The end result here does two things at once. It holds back the grade and protects the foundation area, and it gives the property a clean, defined edge that looks sharp against the white siding. That combination - function and finished appearance - is what good hardscaping is all about. Whether you're dealing with erosion, an uneven yard, or just want to create a more usable and structured outdoor space, a retaining wall is one of the highest-value improvements you can make to a property. Built right, it lasts for decades with almost no maintenance required.

Yard Washing Out? Here's How We Fixed a Serious Drainage Problem

Trenching in West MichiganWhen a yard keeps washing out, it's not just an eyesore - it's a warning sign. Poor drainage puts your lawn, your foundation, and even your home's structural integrity at risk. This customer was dealing with exactly that. Clogged lines and improper runoff had been slowly eating away at the yard, and it was getting worse. Here's the thing about drainage issues - they rarely fix themselves. Water always finds the path of least resistance, and if that path runs through your yard or toward your foundation, the damage compounds over time. We came out, assessed the full scope of what was going on, and put together a plan to actually solve it rather than just patch it. The work involved trenching out long, clean runs across the yard and laying solid drainage pipe to redirect water where it belongs. We brought in the right equipment to do it efficiently without tearing up more of the yard than necessary. Every connection and outlet point was set up intentionally - no guesswork, no shortcuts. A drainage system is only as good as its design. That's something a lot of people don't realize until they've already had a half-hearted fix fail on them. We think about where the water is coming from, where it needs to go, and what could cause problems down the road. That's the difference between a real solution and a temporary one. If your yard has soft spots, standing water, or you notice soil washing away after a rain, those are signs something isn't draining right. Getting ahead of it now is always cheaper than dealing with foundation repairs or major erosion later. We do this work every day and we know what it takes to get it right.

Prepping Downtown Ada for New Public Benches

Paver removal, sub-base prep, and concrete footings in downtown AdaWe're right in the middle of a cool downtown improvement job in Ada - pulling pavers, prepping the ground, and getting everything ready for concrete so new benches can be installed along the main corridor. It's detailed work, but that's exactly the kind of thing we enjoy. Here's the basic challenge with a job like this. The existing paver walkway is already in place, and we can't just tear through it carelessly. We have to pull the pavers out cleanly, set them aside, dig down to the right depth, prep the sub-base, and get the area ready for concrete footings. Then those same pavers go right back in around the finished installation. It takes patience and a steady hand. Working in a high-traffic downtown area adds another layer. Pedestrians are walking by, businesses are open, and vehicles are parked right next to the work zone. Proper barricading and traffic cones aren't optional - they're part of doing the job right and keeping everyone safe while the work gets done. We take genuine pride in being part of projects like this. Downtown Ada is a place people actually want to spend time, and adding more spots for folks to sit and enjoy the area is a small thing that makes a real difference. We're glad to play a part in improving the heart of town. This kind of work is a good example of what we do beyond typical residential paver installation and trenching jobs. Municipal and commercial sites have their own set of requirements, and we're set up to handle them - from the planning stage all the way through cleanup.
